What a beautiful day it's been. We didn't even get up until almost 7:30, had some coffee, and donned our tennis shoes for an hour long walk. Then we headed to downtown Dade City, Florida. It is such a pretty little town. It's full of little antique shops, dress shops, and restaurants. This coming Saturday, is their annual Kumquat Festival. So every shop was gearing up for that. They said they were expecting around 40,000 people to visit their town during this festival.
Who knew kumquats were so popular? Personally, I had never seen or tasted a kumquat before today. Now I can say, I saw one, I tried it and I loved it. They're about the size of a grape but they look like an orange. They are orange and the skin feels like an orange. It has a sour/sweet taste. I really liked it. Mike did too. The funny thing is, you just plop the entire kumquat, skin and all, into your mouth and eat it. They make pies and marmalade out of these little things. It's a good thing they don't have to peel them or there would probably be nothing made of them. It would be like peeling hundreds of grapes to make a pie with. Anyway, Saturday, when we return for the Kumquat Festival, I'm trying a piece of kumquat pie.
The festival starts about 9:30 in the morning and goes throughout the day and evening. There is music going on all day long and little booths set up everywhere. We walked the entire downtown area today and it's a good size town. I believe we walked through every shop there except maybe two. One, I didn't see until we were leaving town and the other was a quilt shop with lots of fabric in there for making quilts. I avoided the fabric/quilt shop on purpose because I can't breathe around all the fabrics. There is something in them that I'm allergic to, I guess. I've always been that way.
Anyway, if you ever get the opportunity to drive through Dade City, Florida, you must take the time to stop and walk through the town and visit the shops. Of course, all the way back to the camper, I had to listen to Mike make jokes about kumquats. He is too funny. I cried all the way home. "Yeah, I wrote this song while sittin' on the back porch thinkin' 'bout my girlfriend. Yeah, I nicknamed her "Ole Kumquat". She was a little sour and a little sweet. Sometimes she could be a little seedy. So I'm goin' to dedicate this song to Ole Kumquat." There was more--so much more.
It was a great day so now we're back in our little home on wheels just chillin'.
